Yoshitomo Nara is a Japanese contemporary artist known for paintings, drawings and sculptures of solitary children and animals. Their oversized heads, wide eyes and confrontational expressions combine the visual language of kawaii culture with anger, melancholy, rebellion and emotional isolation.
This archive explores Nara’s recurring figures, his formative years in Germany and the influence of punk music, popular culture and childhood experience on his work.
