Lucio Fontana

Lucio Fontana was an Italian-Argentine artist and the founder of Spatialism, one of the most influential movements in postwar European art. Through his radical experiments with canvas, space, light, and matter, Fontana challenged the traditional boundaries of painting and sculpture.

He is best known for the Concetti Spaziali, including his celebrated Tagli and Buchi, in which cuts and perforations opened the surface of the canvas toward real space. These gestures transformed the artwork from an image into a physical and conceptual environment, anticipating developments in installation, Minimalism, and conceptual art.
