Theaster Gates is an American artist born in Chicago in 1973. Trained in urban planning and ceramics, he works across sculpture, installation, performance, architecture and social practice. His projects connect artistic production with cultural preservation, community life and the transformation of neglected urban spaces.
Gates uses clay, tar, timber and materials recovered from abandoned buildings. He often gives discarded objects and structures new economic, cultural and spiritual value. Through the Rebuild Foundation, which he founded in 2010, he has transformed properties on Chicago’s South Side into spaces for art, archives, education and collective activity.
Projects such as the Stony Island Arts Bank preserve and reactivate important records of Black American history. Gates does not treat the archive as a static collection. He turns it into a living social resource and asks who decides what deserves protection.
