Emilio Prini

Emilio Prini (Stresa, 1943–Rome, 2016) pushed Arte Povera towards the point at which the art object might almost disappear. From his debut in 1967, he worked with photography, typewritten texts, sound, light, measurement and oral language. In Perimetro d’aria, lights and sound defined the dimensions of a room while leaving it nearly empty. Absence was not a refusal to work, but a method for testing what remains when material production and authorial intention are reduced.

This archive gathers articles, exhibitions and critical readings of Prini’s investigation into the standard and non-standard, reproduction, perception and the consumption of media. He repeatedly returned to a limited group of works, altering their context, format and status while resisting the definitive object and stable catalogue. His withdrawal from regular exhibition activity contributed to his enigmatic reputation, but his radicality lies in a more precise question: how can art exist without becoming a commodity, a fixed document or the predictable repetition of itself?
