Germano Celant
Germano Celant (Genoa, 1940–Milan, 2020) was an art historian, critic and curator who understood naming as a cultural act. In 1967 he coined the term Arte Povera, organised Arte Povera–Im Spazio at Galleria La Bertesca in Genoa and published Arte Povera: Notes for a Guerrilla War in Flash Art. The definition brought radically different practices into a recognisable formation and gave postwar Italian art a new international position.
This archive gathers articles, exhibitions and critical perspectives on Celant’s work and legacy. He did more than identify a movement: he constructed its exhibitions, bibliography, archive and institutional afterlife. His trajectory led from the language of artistic guerrilla warfare to the Guggenheim Museum, the 1997 Venice Biennale and Fondazione Prada. It also embodies a central tension in contemporary art: how an anti-system practice becomes museum history. Celant demonstrated that critics and curators do not simply interpret history after it happens. Through selection, language and repetition, they actively participate in producing it.
