Antonio Ligabue (1899–1965) was a Swiss-born Italian painter whose intensely expressive work occupies a singular position between outsider art, naïve art and twentieth-century Italian expressionism.
Known for his dramatic self-portraits, wild animals and rural landscapes, Ligabue transformed isolation, psychological suffering and close observation of nature into a powerful visual language. This section explores his life, paintings and critical reception, as well as his complex relationship with Art Brut and the institutional art world.
