Yayoi Kusama (born 1929) is a Japanese artist whose work explores repetition, obsession, infinity and the dissolution of the individual within space. Through painting, sculpture, installation, performance and immersive environments, she has developed a distinctive visual language based on polka dots, mirrored surfaces and recurring organic forms.
This section explores Kusama’s artworks, exhibitions and cultural influence, from her experimental activity in 1960s New York to the global success of her Infinity Mirror Rooms. It also examines the relationship between personal experience, mental health, spectacle and the contemporary art market.
